October 20–26, 2025, marks OT Week in Australia – a time to celebrate the incredible work of occupational therapists and the life-changing impact they have on individuals and communities. This dedicated week also includes World Occupational Therapy Day on October 27th, which in 2025 carries the powerful theme: “Occupational Therapy in Action.”

But what exactly are we celebrating during OT Week? It’s more than just a profession, we’re celebrating the art and science of helping people do what they need and want to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities. Occupational therapy (OT) empowers individuals to live more independent, fulfilling, and meaningful lives – no matter their age, background, or health status.

Why OT Week Is Important

OT Week is an opportunity to:

  • Raise awareness of the breadth and depth of occupational therapy
  • Acknowledge the vital role OTs play in healthcare, education, disability, mental health, and community settings
  • Celebrate the people whose lives are changed through occupational therapy
  • Encourage conversations about how meaningful engagement supports wellbeing across the lifespan

This year’s theme, “Occupational Therapy in Action,” highlights the dynamic and responsive nature of our work – always evolving to meet the unique needs of individuals, families, and communities.

Why It’s Personal to Me

I’m passionate about sharing the word on how OTs can be utilised in all areas of life. So often, people have had just one experience with an OT, perhaps during a hospital stay, an injury, or at school, and they assume that’s the full scope of what we do. But occupational therapy goes far beyond a single setting or service.

There are countless ways OTs can be “in action” – from helping a child learn to regulate their emotions, to supporting someone return to work after an injury, to modifying a home to prevent falls, or helping someone reconnect with activities they love after illness or trauma. I want people to know that OT is not a one-size-fits-all service – it’s deeply personal, purposeful, and powerful.

How OTs Support Independence, Recovery, and Emotional Health Across the Lifespan

At MET Phys, our occupational therapists are proud to be part of this mission. Here’s how we support people at all stages of
life:

  1. Promoting Independence
Children: We help children develop foundational skills like self-care, play, handwriting, and classroom participation. Whether it’s learning to tie shoelaces or manage emotions at school, our support builds their confidence and ability to thrive in daily life.

Adults: Independence might mean returning to work after an injury, learning to manage a chronic condition, or balancing home and work life. We work alongside clients to overcome physical, cognitive, or emotional barriers to independence.

Older Adults: For seniors, maintaining independence may involve falls prevention, home modifications, or support with memory and self-care. We focus on empowering older adults to stay active and engaged in their homes and communities.
  2. Supporting Recovery
Children: Recovery can include regaining function after illness or surgery, processing trauma, or improving sensory and emotional regulation for children with developmental differences.

Adults: We support recovery from injuries, mental health challenges, surgeries, and neurological conditions such as stroke. This includes building routines, adapting tasks, and restoring roles and purpose.

Older Adults: Recovery might involve re-learning tasks after a fall or managing degenerative conditions like Parkinson’s. Our interventions help maintain dignity and quality of life through personalised support.
  3. Fostering Emotional Health
Children: Through play, emotional coaching, and sensory integration, we support children to understand and express emotions, build resilience, and develop healthy coping strategies.

Adults: For many adults, emotional wellbeing is closely tied to identity, productivity, and relationships. We work with individuals to reduce stress, manage anxiety or burnout, and find balance in everyday life.

Older Adults: Transitioning to retirement, coping with loss, or facing health declines can impact emotional wellbeing. We provide support through meaningful engagement, community connection, and routines that enhance mood and purpose.
